When trying to decide on the artwork to share this month, I kept coming back to pictures with Benja and going, “Aw,” at myself because her fate in the books hurt me more than it hurt you, I promise. She’s always been one of my favorite side characters from this story, and there’s something really cool about the Sanctuary jinn magic.
Benja Using Jinn Magic
While this picture isn’t from any scene in particular, it happened in my backstory from the time before Esme arrives in the Sanctuary to join the team.
To create this picture, I found a stock model who captures Benja’s look exactly as she appears in my mind (I’m sure you’ll see more of her in future months’ artwork), and I added Benja’s characteristic braids for good measure. Then came drawing the cavali uniform. Also, I had probably too much fun adding jinn tattoo squiggles and the oily, smoky, liquid-y curse flowing out of her arm.
The monsters in the background? Crustacox! They’re made from a combination of armadillo backs, octopus arms, and goat feet…because that’s just always what they looked like in my head. These demons always creeped me out probably even more than the bentaforx because suction-y tentacles make me cringe. And I really can’t explain why I made them herd animals except that I remember watching videos of bison running and thinking how scary it would be to get stuck in their path. You’ll also see some chiroptorx in the background, which are a combo of pterodactyl heads, bat wings, rat tails, and eagle legs/talons.
That’s it for this month! I hope you’re enjoying these little artistic glimpses into my stories. This one seemed particularly appropriate for spooky season — Happy Halloween!
